The scientific names of genus- or species-group taxa should be printed in a type-face (font) different from that used in the text; such names are usually printed in italics, which should not be used for names of higher taxa.

Preface

As in all recent editions, scientific names under the jurisdiction of the Code, irrespective of rank, are consistently printed in italic type. The Code sets no binding standard in this respect, as typography is a matter of editorial style and tradition, not of nomenclature. Nevertheless, editors and authors, in the interest of international uniformity, may wish to consider following the practice exemplified by the Code, which has been well received in general and is followed in a number of botanical and mycological journals. To set off scientific names even better, italics are not used for technical terms and other words in Latin, although they are still used for word elements that are part of a scientific name.

Suggestions for Authors and Publishers

For scientific names of taxa, conventions shall be used which are appropriate to the language of the country and to the relevant journal and publishing house concerned. These should preferably indicate scientific names by a different type face, e.g., italic, or by some other device to distinguish them from the rest of the text.
拙訳：タクソンの学名に関しては、国の言語ならびに関連する雑誌および関係する出版社にふさわしい慣例を使用しなければならない。それらはできれば、例えばイタリック体などの異なる書体によって、または文書の残りの部分と区別するための何らかの措置によって、学名を表示すべきである。

Rule 3.21

The entire species name (both word components) shall be italicized.

Rule 3.27

In formal taxonomic usage, the accepted names of virus, viroid and satellite realms, subrealms, kingdoms, subkingdoms, phyla, subphyla, classes, subclasses, orders, suborders, families, subfamilies, genera and subgenera are printed in italics and the first letters of the names are capitalized.

Species names are printed in italics and have the first letter of the first word capitalized.

In order to distinguish scientific names from other (e.g., vernacular) names, all scientific names should be italicized when they appear in print.
